B10
FOOD BANK PROJECT

OUR STORY

Our food bank serves the people of Small Heath and surrounding areas - particularly those from lower economic backgrounds or homes where English is a second language. Poverty is a barrier - but English as a second language can also prove to be a severe barrier to reaching essential services. Our multilingual team who are from the community hope to engage and continue to reach these communities.

We started our food bank activities during the height of the Covid Crisis in 2021 with the aim of assisting our service users - now with the cost-of-living crisis- the service has become more essential than ever.

WHO WE HELP

Through our work, we aim to provide relief from the cost of living crisis for the community. Participants attend the bi-monthly food bank we run. We also provide emergency food parcels for those who are unable to leave home, as a response to the demand expressed by our service users. We have noticed many that have used the service recently are new to the service. With an increasing number of people who speak English as a second language. Our packages consist of essentials - rice, pasta, tinned goods and dairy.

We have recently also supplied recipes for cheap, healthy meals. Our radius is that of Small Heath and surrounding areas which are amongst the most deprived in the city. Our organisation also works with the HAFS (The Holiday Activity Programme) To tackle food poverty within the city for young people.
